MR. ELLIS HUGHES, RACINE, WISCONSIN.

At 2 o'clock Sunday morning Ellis Hughes died at his home in this city, after several weeks of severe sickness, his ailment being jaundice, aged 72 years.

He was a native of Dyffryn Ardudwy, Merioneth, North Wales. His father and mother, William and Jennet Hughes and nine children emigrated to the United States in 1841, and went direct to Newark, O., his father arriving in Racine Christmas day of the same year, and the balance of the family came here in 1842.

Having lived a few months in the city, then a small village, the family subsequently settled on a farm in the town of Mount Pleasant where they lived several years, and ultimately took up their residence at number 900 Villa street.

It will be noticed that the family were among the very first Welsh settlers of Racine and their descendants are numerous and influential.

Ellis Hughes followed his trade as mason and bricklayer all his life, and assisted in the erection of many houses and edifices in the city. He was a hard working man all his life and enjoyed excellent health till he was attacked by his last sickness which proved fatal.

He was twice married, and two children by his first wife survive, a son and daughter both living in California, the daughter arriving here less than two days before his death. He leaves beside a wife and step daughter, and an only sister, Mrs. Capt. H. H. Jones, Villa street, to mourn his loss.

He was a very kind husband and an indulgent father, and a very true friend. He has been a member of the Welsh Presbyterian church for many years.

The funeral will take place Tuesday at 1.30pm from the house, 840 Center street, and from the Welsh Presbyterian church at 2pm.

Welsh Pioneer at Rest.

Ellis Hughes, one of the oldest Welsh American residents of Racine and a man of sterling qualities, passed peacefully away early Sunday morning at his home on Center street, aged 72 years. The cause of his death was jaundice, from which he had been a patient sufferer for several weeks.

Ellis Hughes was a native of North Wales. His father and mother, William and Janet Hughes, with nine children, emigrated to the United States and went direct to Newark, Ohio. His father arrived in Racine Christmas Day of the same year, and the balance of the family came here in 1842.
