Thomas Owens was a man of high ideals, clean, gentlemanly and with a pleasing personality, which radiated sunshine wherever he went. His kindness and thoughtfullness of neighbors was one of his traits of character. Several will recall his membership of the Young Man's Guild of some twenty years ago, where he was most popular.

He and his son were close, more like chums than the usual father and son relationship. It was a pleasure to see them together, knowing the deep regard each held for the other.

Granville has lost several well beloved people in the past year and Thomas Owens is one of them indeed. He will be missed by many who admired him for his fine characteristics.

Injuries sustained when he fell between 40 and 50 feet into a slate quarry pit yesterday noon proved fatal to Thomas D. Owens, 49 years of age, and a former well known baseball player of Granville. His condition last night was considered serious but not critical, taking a sudden turn for the worse at 4 o'clock this morning. He died at the Emma Laing Stevens Hospital at Granville where he had been taken following the accident.

Owens was employed as a slate-maker and was working with two companions, William E. and James Jones in a slate quarry located about four miles from Granville. Owens left his companions at 11 o'clock and was thought to have gone down to the pit, and when he failed to appear at lunch hour the Jones brothers went out to look for him and discovered him lying in the ice and snow at the bottom of the pit. He had evidently been lying there for the period of time he was missing as he was suffering from cold and exposure in addiotion to his injuries.

Much difficulty was experienced in getting him warm and out of the pit and he was rushed to the office of Dr. D. C. McKenzie in Granville, who orderen him taken to the local hospital. Examination revealed several broken ribs, deep cuts on the head, severe lacerations on the face, possible internal injuries, and a fractued skull.

Survivors are his widow, and one son, William, former Granville High School baseball and basketball star; two brothers, Myrddin of Granville and William M. of Watertown, New York, one sister, Mrs. Hugh G. Williams of Granville.

Funeral services are to be held from the Welsh Presbyterian Church, Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
