Lewis was born in Corris, Wales and married Anne Ellin Jones on October 18th, 1879 in Portmadoc, Caernarvonshire, North Wales.They had six sons, and three daughters. His oldest son Griffith John Griffith passed away in Wales at the age of 1 year old. The child is buried in Corris, Wales.
It was 10 months later they immigrated to the United States of America on November 23rd, 1883. Lewis and his family lived in Utica, New York for seven years, and then moved west to live in St Paul, Minnesota.
