Evan R. Jones, Utica, Former Rail Foreman, Dies.

Utica, July 31st. Evan R. Jones Sr., 68, former maintenance foreman for the New York State Railways and an employee of that company for 31 years, died yesteday in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Leonard F. Wilbur, Utica, after several years' illness. He was active in young people's work and served as scoutmaster of the Yorkville troop for many years.

A native of Wales, Mr. Jones came to Waterville when a young man and engaged in farming. He joined the railways company in 1907 after being connected with a New Hartford laundry for 13 years. He retired in 1937, when he became ill. His wife, the former Jane Davies of New York Mills is among the survivors.

Evan R. Jones, 68, former maintenance foreman for the New York State Railways, died Tuesday, July 10th, 1940, in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Leonard F. Wilbur, after several years illness.

Mr. Jones had been employed by the railway company for 31 years. Interested in young people's work, he served as scoutmaster of the Yorkville troop for many years.

He was also active in the affairs of the Salem Welsh Church of New York Mills where he was chairman of the board of trustees and taught one of the Sunday school classes.

He was born June 27th 1872 in Dinas Mawddwy, Wales, came to Waterville when a young man and engaged in farming. He later was employed by John Royle, well known businessman and for 13 years was connected with a laundry in New Hartford. In 1907 he joined the New York State Railways system, where he worked until 1937, when he became ill.

In 1903 he married Jane Davies in new York Mills, where he lived until 1913, when the family moved to Yorkville.

Mr. Jones is survived by his widow, his daughter, Mrs. Wilbur, two sons, Evan Jr., Whitesboro and John, Utica, a sister Mrs. E. L. Morgan, Washington Mills and a brother, Jack, Lancashire, England.

A prayer service for the immediate families will be conducted in Mrs. Wilbur's home at 2pm tomorrow, followed by funeral service in the Salem Church, New York Mills at 2.15pm with the Rev. John Pritchard officiating. Internment will be in Crown Hill Memorial Park.
