John D. Jones Dies, Aged 79.John D. Jones, president of J. D. Jones and Sons, Inc., manufacturers of the Jones marine and machine bearings, died Wednesday at the age of 79 at the home of his son, Richard L. Jones, 2933 N. E. Schuyler street.
Mr. Jones was born in Porthmadog, North Wales, in 1863 and came to the United States as a young boy. He went into railroad maintenance work and became master mechanic of the Northern Pacific railroad before founding his own business at Walla Walla in 1905.
The Jones bearing industry was moved to Portland in 1925 and the bearings Mr. Jones invented are now produced at the plant of the Willamette Iron and Steel corporation.
Surviving are three sons, Griff I., Wynne T. and Richard L. Jones, all of Portland; one brother, William Jones, and a sister, Mrs. J. T. Ellis, both of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and ten grandchildren.
Services are to be held at Riverview Abbey, Thursday at 3:30 P.M. with A. J. Rose and Son in charge.
