John J. Roberts, 74, oldest East Mauch Chunk veteran of the Spanish American War, died yesterday morning in Coaldale hospital where he had been a patient since Friday.Born in Conway, Wales, he was a son of the late John and Catherine Roberts and came to this country as a young man and lived in Slatington. In 1896 he joined the Pennsylvania National Guard and in 1898 volunteered for service in the Spanish American war. He was a member of Company D. of the old Fourth Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry.
After his discharge he made his home in Mauch Chunk. For 35 years he was a brakeman for Central Railroad Company.
Surviving are his wife, the former Annie Watkins; a son, Nelson Roberts of Reading, and two grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 8.30p.m. tomorrow in the Melber funeral home, East Mauch Chunk. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Hartwig funeral home in Slatington with Rev. Owen Jones of Scranton officiating. Internment in Fairview cemetery Slatington.
Calling hours at the Melber funeral home Wednesday 7 to 9 p.m. and at the Hartwig funeral home Thursday from noon to 2 p.m.
Comrades of the George H. Schwartz camp, United Spanish War Veterans, will conduct memorial services at the Hartwig funeral home and accord military honors at the burial.
