ELLIS J. EVANS. POULTNEY, RUTLAND COUNTY, VERMONT.

Ellis J. Evans of South Poultney, suffered a fractured skull Tuesday afternoon as a result of an accident which occurred at the Rising and Nelson Slate Quarry in South Poultney.

He was rushed to the Rutland hospital in an extremely serious condition and has remained so for several days. The accident occurred when a hoist chain gave away and plunged a heavy rock upon him.

The community was shocked early Wednesday morning, October 19th, when it learned of the sudden death of Ellis Evans. Mr. Evans who apparently felt well when he retired Tuesday night, died of a heart attack, and when his daughter, Mrs. John R. Williams, went to his room in the morning he has passed away but a short time before.

Mr. Evans was born in Brynrefail, North Wales, 70 years ago and came to South Poultney with his family about 27 years ago. During the first World War he served his country with the British forces.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Laura Evans; three daughters, Miss Elizabeth Evans and Mrs. John R. Williams of South Poultney, Mrs. Elvet Griffith of Schenectady; one son, John Evans of Fair Haven and six grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at the home Friday afternoon, with the Rev. Charles E. Rice officiating. Burial was in Hillside cemetery in Poultney. The bearers were owen Jones, Daniel DeBonis, John W. Roberts, Thomas P. Jones of South Poultney, Harry Savard and Maurice W. Roberts of Poultney.
