MR. JOHN GRIFFITH "JACK" JONES. CLINTON, ONEIDA CO, NEW YORK.
John G. Jones, 77, formerly of 121 Boyce Avenue, died yesterday in the Masonic Hospital after an illness of several months.Mr Jones was born June 4th, 1882, in Dolwyddelan, Wales, the son of Hugh and Alice Jones.
He was educated in Wales' public schools and came to Utica in 1904.
There he obtained, the position of accountant with the Roberts-Wicks Company, manufacturers of men's clothing. Eventually he became office and credit manager and assistant treasurer, continuing in that capacity until the discontinuation of the company in 1933. In 1936 he was accountant and assistant treasurer for the Acme Fuel Company of Utica. From 1947 until his retirement, in 1958, he was assistant secretary and assistant treasurer of the Hotel Utica.
He married Edith H. Edwards in 1908. She died on June 27, 1950.
Prominent in Utica musical circles, Mr. Jones was a member of the Haydn Male Chorus and served as president for several years. He was also one of the original members of the Liberty Lodge quartet and a soloist in Calvary Episcopal Church and First Presbyterian Church. For several years he was treasurer of First Presbyterian Church and served on its Board of Trustees. He helped organize the Civic Chorus and served as president for a time.
For a while, Mr. Jones was active in politics. He was elected supervisor of the Seventh Ward in Utica in 1931 and re-elected in 1933. He served as deputy comptroller in Mayor Samuel Sloan's administration during 1933-34. In recent years he became a member of Moriah Presbyterian Church. He was a member of Liberty Lodge 959, FandAM; the Mohawk Valley Consistory; Z iyara Temple; Rotary Club; St. David Society; Valley View Golf Club, and a director for the Crown Hill Memorial Park.
Surviving are two sons, John Haydn Jones of Riverdale and Arthur G. Jones of New Delhi, India; a sister, Mrs. Sarah Thomas of Utica; three brothers, David Jones of Utica, Richard E. Jones of Syracuse and Peter Jones of Cooperstown; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be at 11 tomorrow from the Williams Funeral Home, 1115 West Street.
Burial will be in Crown Hill Memorial Park.
Liberty Lodge will conduct ritualistic services at 7 tonight.
